We will perform the first visit of your pregnancy in week 7-8, considering as your ‘date of last period’ the first day of your last period. If the pregnancy has been obtained by assisted reproductive techniques, your clinic will specify how many weeks along you are depending on the procedure performed.
This visit will begin with a physical examination and complete medical history, in which we will review your medical background, chronic diseases (high blood pressure, diabetes, etc.) as well as your obstetric history (number of pregnancies, miscarriages, premature births, etc.). In this way, we can establish a personalized monitoring plan for you and your pregnancy.
Secondly, we will perform the first scan of the pregnancy, in which we will determine the number of embryos and confirm that it is a viable pregnancy.
In addition, we will discuss what the screening for chromosomal abnormalities is. The screening is performed between 12 and 14 weeks of gestation and allows us to estimate the risk the pregnancy has of presenting a chromosomal abnormality such as, Down syndrome (trisomy 21). We will inform you about the two screening methods that exist currently: the combined screening test (based on maternal age + placental hormones + nuchal translucency) and the fetal cell free DNA in maternal blood test or non-invasive prenatal test, discussing which one is the most suitable for you, when to do it, and possible results.
